How to Create Space in a Small House

If there is one question we get over and over again about living in a small house with a family of 5, it's "how do you all live there without driving each other nuts?" I think this points to the cultural belief (in the United States, at least) that a bigger home leads to a happier family. How can you keep the kids happy if there isn't a playroom? Where will all the food from Sam's Club fit if there isn't a walk-in pantry? What if we ALL need to use the bathroom at the same time and don't have enough bathrooms?

Fear of the unknown and a desire to avoid discomfort both play heavily into this way of thinking. And I get it, your home is a big commitment and raising kids to be happy and healthy is a huge responsibility. Plus, there is the social stigma of living in small homes.

Can you live in a small home AND create a sense of space? You can, but not in the way you may think.

If you actually decide to live small, you won't find your answer in storage furniture or practicing minimalism (although both are incredibly helpful.) Rather, the answer to creating a sense of space in a small home is to change your attitude.

Yep, that's it!

The older I get, the more I believe in the power of your thoughts. Think negatively, and you will notice all of the bad around you. Swim with gratitude, and the world and your situation will seem much brighter.

I've had my moments of hating living small and wishing we had a big ol' house. But then I remember our values and the purpose behind living small. I focus on how living in a small home triggers happy childhood memories, and I let gratitude wash over me as I think of how lucky I am to have my children so close to me (and also still want to be around me.) I imagine how others around the world live and the immense wealth that I have in my 675 sq. ft.

Living small can either be a nightmare or a dream come true, but you decide. What's it worth to you? Does it actually reflect what you value? If not, why torture yourself in a tiny space? But if living in a small house is in alignment with your values, what are you waiting for?

You can't create more space in a small house, but you can create happy memories and a tight family bond. You can create better finances through less house expenses and you can find happiness in what you do have rather than what's lacking. Space is relative, so make whatever you have count.....even all 675 square feet.
